| | Halloween Fundraising for UNICEF 不給糖就搗蛋! by Ivy Liu | One of the most successful trick-or-treat traditions carries on to this day. 其中一項最成功的不給糖就搗蛋傳統持續進行至今日。 | Many children are familiar with going from door to door on Halloween to collect sweets▼ in their neighborhood and indulging in their stash▼ of candy later at home. _(1)_ In some parts of the world, children are sent out on All Hallows' Eve carrying little orange cardboard▼ boxes with the iconic words "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" on them. One may ask what a respectable organization such as UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund, which helps millions of children all over the world, has to do with a Halloween tradition. It all started from the time UNICEF was created when World War II came to an end in Europe to provide assistance to children in countries damaged by the war. _(2)_ The Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF fundraising program started in 1950 in Philadelphia by Clyde Allison, a local priest▼, and his wife to help raise money for children in impoverished▼ areas. _(3)_ Nowadays, donating US$5 to UNICEF can give a child five days of food. Children have collected over US$175 million since the establishment of the campaign. The program has also worked very well outside the US. _(4)_ Last year, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF celebrated its 65th anniversary by collaborating with Peanuts, which also turned 65. _(5)_ Thus, beloved characters like Charlie Brown and Snoopy will inspire children to be part of a worthy campaign that actively helps save children's lives all over the world. (A) The organization now works in more than 190 countries and strives to protect children from preventable deaths. (B) It became very popular in Canada, and in 2001, it was introduced to Hong Kong. (C) However, the candy-harvesting day can be a child's first charitable experience, too. (D) According to reports, food and medicine are running out and clean water is in short supply. (E) Back then, a dime could provide 50 glasses of milk to children. (F) In November, The Peanuts Movie was released, introducing the entire Peanuts gang to a whole new generation of children.
