Out of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands, none lights up the imagination quite like Bali. Bali’s breathtaking temples, culture, and art will leave you feeling as if you’ve entered a different world. Most visitors to Bali start in Ubud—a city made famous by the movie Eat Pray Love. At the Ubud Art Market, all sorts of local handmade items and souvenirs are sold. Just a short distance away is the Ubud Royal Palace. Here you can get a close look at Balinese building design and enjoy a walk through the palace’s many green gardens. At night, traditional dance performances show off Bali’s rich cultural history. One of the best Hindu temples to visit is the 16th-century Pura Tanah Lot. Tanah Lot means “land in the sea.” This is fitting because the temple sits on a high rock, and it’s surrounded by crashing ocean waves. If you want to experience something special, nothing compares to watching the sun come up from the top of Mount Batur. But to see it, you’ll have to climb this 1,700-meter-high volcano in the dark! |
