MassKara: Smiling in the Face of Tragedy　　笑一個吧！菲律賓微笑面具嘉年華

　　The MassKara Festival in the Philippines is an endless stream of color, music, and smiling faces. The multitudes◆ of masks are joyful, lively, and just a bit over the top. __1__ its cheerful appearance, the annual event actually arose from tragedy.
　　Nearly 40 years ago, the Negros Occidental province◆ was struggling. The price for its primary agricultural◆ crop—sugar cane◆—was at an all-time low. Two artists wanted to advertise mask-making as the region’s new livelihood◆. In order to __2__ this idea, a festival of masks was planned. A few months before the celebration was scheduled to take place, a ferry◆ heading to Bacolod, the province’s capital city, collided with a tanker◆ and sank. More than 100 people were listed as dead or missing after the accident, and many of the __3__ were from the Negros Occidental area. In light of this tragedy, organizers were prepared to call off the event. However, the government decided to __4__ with the festival and use it to show people that the region could triumph over disaster.
　　Today, MassKara is one of the country’s largest tourist attractions◆. In October, Bacolod becomes “The City of Smiles.” Performers dance through the streets wearing elaborately __5__ masks. 　　菲律賓面具嘉年華是層出不窮的色彩、音樂和笑臉。眾多的面具給人快樂及活潑的氣息，只是有點過頭而已。儘管這個年度活動表面上很歡樂，事實上它卻是起源於悲劇。
　　近四十年前，西內格羅省正在苦苦掙扎。該省主要的農作物 ── 甘蔗 ── 的價格陷入空前低谷。兩位藝術家想要宣傳製作面具的產業並作為該區新的生計來源。為了要推廣這個想法，他們計劃了一個面具節慶。就在該慶典預計要舉行的數個月前，一艘航向該省首府巴科洛德的渡輪和一艘油輪相撞並沉入海裡。意外發生後，超過一百個人被列為死亡或是失蹤，且許多受難者是來自西內格羅地區。有鑑於這場悲劇，主辦人準備要取消這個活動。不過，政府決定要照常舉辦這個慶典，並用它向人民表示該地區夠能戰勝災難。
