British actor Benedict Cumberbatch is enjoying a golden period as one of Britain and America's most popular actors. He rose to fame in 2010 as Sherlock Holmes in the TV series Sherlock. He provided the voices for the dragon, Smaug, and the Necromancer in The Hobbit movies. He also played the evil Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness. Finally, a role that earned him both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations came in 2014, when he played British mathematician Alan Turing in the World War II drama The Imitation Game.
Cumberbatch seems to have leapt to stardom, but success didn't come to him from one day to the next. Before Sherlock, the 39-year-old London native had worked steadily for more than a decade onstage and on TV. He acted in many Shakespeare plays and had his first major TV role in 2004 as a young Stephen Hawking. Talking about his early career, Cumberbatch joked in one interview that he played a lot of "big parts in small films, and small parts in big films."
