The Biggest Little Town in Australia
by Daniel Howard

The small town of Coober Pedy has some big surprises.

Coober Pedy is a small town deep in the desert of South Australia. With Coober Pedy's population of less than 2,000 people, you would expect that nothing much ever happens there. __1__ This small town is both a tourist and business hotspot. __2__ Most residents live underground in man-made caves called "dugouts." __3__ Summer temperatures regularly climb to over 40 degrees Celsius, and there is very little rainfall. Coober Pedy's dugouts stay cool all day even without the help of air conditioning, which also prevents stored water from drying up. As it turns out, digging a home is about as expensive as building it. Dugouts are fully functioning homes, with running water and electricity in their multiple rooms. __4__
You might be asking yourself, why would anyone want to live in Coober Pedy in the first place? Besides the Australian Aborigines who originally lived there, the early 20th century saw a number of settlers move into the region to mine stones called opals. In fact, the area around Coober Pedy provides most of the world's gem-quality opals. __5__ So, between its remarkable homes and rich natural resources, Coober Pedy could be Australia's biggest little town.

(A) Tourists love Coober Pedy for its unique homes.
(B) Aboriginal people have a long-standing connection with the area.
(C) However, you'd be wrong.
(D) Tourists can book their own underground rooms at
a number of places, including a local motel.
(E) It
is hence known as the Opal Capital of the World.
(F) These
structures are perfect for Coober Pedy's dry, hot climate.
