One of my favorite travel experiences in Taiwan was my trip to the tiny but beautiful Green Island, which is located off the southeast coast. To get to Green Island, my friend and I took a 50-minute boat ride from Taitung. While the boat ride was a bit rough, it was worth it when we saw the beautiful scene that was waiting for us on the other side. When we arrived, we headed to Nanliao village, where we cooled off with some shaved ice that was topped with a Green Island specialty: seaweed! The shaved ice shop we chose had a jail-themed design that was inspired by Green Island's dark past. The island was once the place where political prisoners were sent. Later that evening, we joined a wildlife tour offered by the bed-and-breakfast we stayed at. We hopped on our scooter and followed our tour guide around the island as he showed us animals and plants that call Green Island home. We spotted Formosan sika deer, goats, and even a rare type of stick insect. |
