Phone it in 不是打電話，而是……
David和外籍同事談起最近新進同事的工作表現。同事說了一句：
“He doesn't care about the job, he’s just phoning it in.“
David心想，這同事整天在「講電話」，他倒是沒有發現這點。可別會錯意了，phone it in和打電話沒有關係。
1. “He doesn't care about the job. He’s just phoning it in.
（Ｘ）他不在意這份工作，整天都在講電話。
（Ｏ）他不在意這份工作，只是敷衍了事。
“Phone in和call in，dial in一樣，都有打電話進來的意思。像生病了打電話請假，我們會說：
He called/phoned in sick. 他打電話來請病假。
但“Phone it in”卻有另一層意思，是指「敷衍、交差了事」。意思和打電話差得十萬八千里，來看看是怎麼回事。
想像一個情景，一群朋友相約了要一起聚餐，大家都到了，突然有個人打電話來說抱歉，不能到場。你會不會覺得這有點敷衍？Phone it in大概就是這個意思，該來而不來、應做而不做、不在意、沒熱情、沒誠意，這種層次的敷衍。來看看應用的情境：
I could tell the teacher was phoning it in today and didn't seem to be as enthusiastic as usual.
我看得出來那老師就只是敷衍了事，不像他以往那樣有熱情。
Phone it in也經常用在形容演員演戲，草率敷衍、不認真：
A lot of people think Tom is tired of the show and phoning it in.
很多人覺得Tom對此劇已感倦怠，沒認真在演。
「敷衍」除了phone it in之外，也還有幾個不同的表達，意境上也稍有不同。像去辦個證件，有些單位就會敷衍搪塞，「故意不幫忙」，這時我們可以用runaround這個字。
2. Don't give me the runaround.
（Ｘ）不要給我跑來跑去。
（Ｏ）不要只是敷衍我。
Run和around如果分開來run around，就是「跑來跑去」。例如：
I'm exhausted - I've been running around all morning. 我累壞了— 一整個上午我一直忙個不停。
合在一起runaround就是其抽象的意思，「兜圈子、不直接回答、故意不幫忙」，其實就是敷衍！
I'm trying to get a new visa, but the embassy staff keep giving me the runaround.
我想要辦理新簽證，但是使館人員老是推諉不給我辦。
3. His smile was perfunctory.
（Ｏ）他的笑容很敷衍。
講到「敷衍」，也一定要提perfunctory這個字，是較正式的用法。英英字典的解釋是：
＂done quickly, without taking care or interest＂很快就做好，但沒用心，也不在意，
就是「草草了事、漫不經心，沒想要把事情做好」。
He answered the phone with a perfunctory greeting.
他漫不經心接起電話。
