老外說put it there,到底是把東西放在哪兒?
Nick和客戶談了一個案子,談了好久,終於要成交了。他問客戶:
So, do we have a deal? 那麼,我們達成協議了?
客戶回答:
Sure, put it there.
"Where?”他心想,放在哪兒啊?該不會又要擱置了吧!
1. Put it there.
(X)放在那裡。
(O)一言為定。
別搞錯了,"put it there"是商務口語,有點老派,但還算常見,意思就是「一言為定、來握個手吧」,可以用來指「成交、和解」。表達慶祝的時候,有時還會講兩次:
Put it there, Pal, put it there! 恭喜啊,兄弟!
這個用法大家也許不那麼熟,多看一個情境例句:
$500? OK, it’s a deal. Put it there! 五百塊,一言為定,成交!
2. I don't want to put you out.
(X)我不想把你趕出去。
(O)我不想給你添麻煩。
Put someone out意思是讓人感到不方便,打擾到某人。是美國人常用的片語,相當於
I don't want to bother you. / I don't want to cause you any inconvenience.
看一例句:
Would you be put out if we came tomorrow instead of today? 如果我們明天去而不是今天,會對您造成不便嗎?
3. It was a put-up job.
(X)這是一個搭建的工作。
(O)這是預謀/內定/圈套。
Put up這個片語動詞原來是「搭建」的意思,像搭建一個帳篷。例如:
They put up a tent by the fire. 他們在火堆旁搭起了一個帳篷。
連在一起,put-up job就變成了預謀、設局、圈套。
The whole thing looked like a put-up job. 這整個事情好像是預謀的。
The hotel looked like a good investment, but it turned out that the whole thing was a put-up job. 這個旅館看上去像是個不錯的投資,但後來發現整件事只是一場騙局。
4. Put your face on.
(X)帶上面具。
(O)化點妝吧。
Put on我們熟悉的意思是「穿上」,化妝就像幫臉穿了一件衣服一樣,所以put one’s face on,就是化妝。
